What is Root Canal Treatment (Endodontic Therapy)?

Root canal treatment is the process of removing the nerves, other tissues, and microorganisms (such as bacteria) from inside the root canals of the tooth, then cleaning, shaping, and filling the canal space.

What is the Purpose of Root Canal Treatment?

The main purpose of root canal treatment is to preserve the tooth in the mouth and prevent extraction.

When is Root Canal Treatment Needed?

  • Deep dental decay

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold

  • Severe pain upon touch or chewing

  • Dark discoloration of the tooth

  • Swelling or abscess formation

  • After a fracture or trauma

  • Failed previous root canal treatments

  • Advanced gum disease

  • Over-erupted teeth

When is Root Canal Treatment Not Performed?

  • When the infection has spread extensively

  • If the tooth structure is too damaged to restore

  • In the presence of vertical root fractures

  • When the tooth has lost support due to advanced bone loss

How is Root Canal Treatment Performed?

  1. Examination and X-ray imaging

  2. Local anesthesia

  3. Opening the tooth and removing decay to access the canals

  4. Cleaning out infected tissues

  5. Shaping the root canals

  6. Filling the canals

  7. Finishing the treatment with a filling or crown

What Happens If Root Canal Treatment is Not Performed?

If left untreated, the tooth may be lost and require extraction.

Post-Treatment Instructions for Root Canal Therapy

Nutrition

  • Avoid eating and drinking until numbness wears off

  • Prefer soft foods and avoid hard or grainy items

  • Since root canal-treated teeth are more fragile than natural teeth, be cautious with hard foods such as nuts

Temporary Filling

  • Temporary fillings can wear down, break, or fall out easily

  • Even if the pain decreases, scheduled follow-up appointments must not be skipped

Pain & Swelling

  • Mild discomfort for a few days is normal

  • If pain or swelling occurs, medications prescribed by the dentist should be used regularly

Brushing

  • Teeth should be brushed twice a day for two minutes each time after treatment

Filling Height

  • If the treated tooth feels “too high” when biting, contact your dentist for a quick adjustment
